Dear Jürgen Reis!

It was 40 years ago that you joined the small burgeoning Berlin-based audio company of MBL. Since 1982, you have worked at MBL endeavouring to conceive, develop, and perfect a multitude of innovative, at times even revolutionary, audio speakers and electronics. Four decades during which you enriched and shaped the world of music reproduction. And all the while, whenever you brought out a new product, it was only good enough for you if the listener literally became emotionally transported by the music. No measurement curve, no matter how perfect, could ever leave you satisfied if the music did not touch the listener’s soul.

This unconditional search for the true meaning of music reproduction has led to the world-renowned success that MBL loudspeakers and electronics have today. Your many accomplishments have also been an inspiration to all of us that work at the company. It is not surprising that in the audio industry your name has long been synonymous with competence, consistency, and a deep passion for music.

I share my sincere thanks and gratitude on your 40th anniversary at MBL on not only a job remarkably well done, but also for the tremendous teamwork you have shown all these years. Today, thousands of customers all over the world listen to their favorite music on an audio system created by you. For some, it allows for valuable time away from the hectic pace of everyday life. For others, it is even the center of their lives. But music is always an enrichment – and this is especially true when the world is going through challenging times.

We look forward to the many great achievements still to come in our future together.

Yoshihisa Mori (1941 – 2018)

It is with great sadness that we announce our friend, Yoshihisa Mori died on December 26, 2018, at the age of 77. Mori-san has been our Distributor Consultant for the Japanese market for many years and has supported us with his great wisdom and knowledge of the high-end audio market in his country. During the many years of cooperation, Mori-san has become very dear to us with his humorous and heartfelt nature as well as his unconditional reliability. With him, we have lost a dear friend and are very sad that he had to leave us. Rest in peace, our dear friend! We will always keep an honorable memory of you.

The new Noble Line N31 CD-DAC has received a rare A+ rating in the Stereophile April, 2018 issue.

John Atkinson concluded that digital sound doesn’t get any better than what he heard from the N31. Furthermore he noted that the MBL offered 21 bits of resolution—the current state of the art of digital audio. This prompted John Atkinson the measurer to agree with John Atkinson the listener: “Digital audio engineering doesn’t get any better.”

Bringing out emotions in people as they listen to their favorite music, making the audience sense all the feelings that the artist has put into his composition or performance – that has always been your vocation. For 35 years now, you have been MBL’s chief developer and wholly responsible for developing our wide range of loudspeakers and electronics. Music lovers all over the world enjoy their beloved music thanks to systems designed by your pen and in professional circles our products have received the highest recognition. And since in your life everything is about the music, you have also made some remarkable recordings for some great musicians and orchestras and mastered them with the utmost meticulousness.

In all these years your commitment has never subsided, you have always worked with great care and respect for the cause. And as a person, you have grown in our hearts.

I thank you personally for these 35 years. And I thank you also on behalf of the entire MBL team as well as all music enthusiasts who you have been brought closer to the emotions of the music. It has been an exciting time and we look forward to the future with you – a future that will give us many more exciting products. A future on behalf of the music.

“ Also in the running, as it always is, is MBL’s omnidirectional 101 E MK II, which was terrific—as it always is. Three-D, boxless, beautiful in tone color, dynamic as all get-out, the 101s simply disappear like nothing else—and sound like nothing else. If there is a speaker out there that is more quintessentially fun to listen to…well, point me to it. The 101s may have been a little bright in the upper mids (as MBLs tend to be), but when music sounds this freed-up, colorful, and exciting, who cares? Marvelous.”

Not surprised but thereby not less fascinated he also describes the innovation on the mbl DAC’s the interface technology USB MCMI.

„MBL’s chief engineer Jürgen Reis was at hand for Edgar Kramer to explain some of the technologies involved in producing the company’s outstanding and robot-like 101 E MKII speakers. Jürgen explained that the segments are bent and attached to a moving coil and when signal is applied, the “slices” as he called them, they move inwards and outwards, creating a 360 degree soundfield – much as real instruments do.” (…)

The founder of the online magazine ‘Computer Audiophile’, Chris Connaker, writes in his article ‘CES 2010 Notes’ about the highlights of this years CES. The new interface USB MCMI on the MBL DAC’s left a lasting impression.

“Everyone in high end audio is aware that Mbl manufacturers very good sounding products. I met with Mbl’s Chief Engineer Juergen Reis who provided details about his new USB interface. Some technical aspects were admittedly way over my head, but I understood the gist of what Juergen said. The new Mbl USB interface does register as Asynchronous using the USB Prober utility, but Juergen’s design appeared to take asyc one step further. I jokingly referred to it as Asynchronous+. It will be interesting to see other engineer’s opinions of what Juergen has done and to compare the Mbl interface to other asynchronous interfaces on a technical level. The Mbl USB interface can be added to current Mbl DACs and does not exist as a standalone product.”

You can literally sit anywhere (including “behind” them) and hear a breathtaking stereo soundstage, full of detail, energy, beautiful tone color, and phenomenal bass. I swear it’s like going to the Berliner Philharmonie. If I hadn’t done it so many times before, I would award these sui generis musical-excitement-and-color machines yet another Best Sound of Show. As it is, they were one of the top two or three, as they always are. The damn things gave me goosebumps playing back Track 7 of The International! …”

Guest author Steven C reports about his experiences with the mbl 111 F loudspeaker on this year’s “Rocks Mountain Audio Fest” in Denver, Colorado, USA

„…But, the highlight for me, and best sound I heard at the show, and the best sound I have EVER heard is the new mbl model 111. Here, demonstrated in a system fed by the mbl CD transport, mbl DAC, mbl preamp, and mbl monoblock power amps – 880 watts, “at this load” per side. The rep was using cd’s, alternating with an Apple G5 computer used as music server. Actually, there were computers used as servers in almost EVERY system at the show. Some also used cd, and fewer also spun vinyl, but everyone had computers. And some show attendees brought music they wanted to hear on portable hard drives! Some were also asking to copy one-of-a-kind demo material onto their drives. I don’t know where everyone was Sunday – they were at the show in great numbers – but they were not where I was. It was ideal. I had more than 90 minutes in the best chair in the mbl room. occasionally, others would come in, and if they sat, I would offer up the best seat in Denver. Most declined, and a few took it, but it was only a few minutes before I could once again have it. I cannot wrap my head around the fact that there are TWO speakers above this one inthe mbl line, especially when this one is SO good. According to the rep, all midrange and high frequency drivers  – the pulsing spheres – are identical throughout …”
